Shift4 vs Barclaycard: the full cost comparison
Barclaycard publishes 1.6% pay-as-you-go. We charge 1.25% blended on all cards under £10,000 a month, with a free first terminal and no monthly rental. Here is every cost, side by side.
Shift4 blended rate
Monthly rental
Est. yearly saving at £5,000/mo
Settlement, incl. Saturdays
Barclaycard is the incumbent for a great many UK businesses, often because the merchant services came alongside the business bank account. Familiarity and the comfort of a large bank are real advantages.
The trade-off tends to be a monthly terminal charge and separate debit and credit rates. We offer a single blended 1.25%, no monthly rental and no cost for the machine, which makes the total easy to check against your own statement.

When Barclaycard is the better choice
We are not right for everyone. These are the cases where we would tell you to stay put.
Your merchant services are bundled into a wider Barclays banking package, where unpicking one part can change the pricing on the rest.
You turn over above roughly £25,000/month and have the leverage to negotiate a contracted rate.
You want banking, lending and payments under one large-bank relationship.
Barclaycard does well
Bank-backed, PCI DSS Level 1 acquirer. Genuinely strong for established businesses above £25,000/month who can negotiate. 24/7 fraud support.
Worth knowing: Trustpilot 1.3/5 from 3,100+ reviews. General queries Monday to Friday only.

Your business banking is entirely separate from who processes your card payments, so moving your card machine does not affect your bank account, your overdraft or any lending facility.
Settlement simply arrives into the same bank account from a different acquirer, the next working day. Most businesses overlap terminals for a few days and then send the old one back.
Barclaycard questions, answered
Can I leave my Barclaycard contract early?
Request your contract end date, notice period and any early termination charge in writing. Terminal hire may end on a different date to the merchant services, so ask about both before you decide.
Will switching interrupt my card payments?
No. Your current terminal stays live until you choose to stop using it, and there is no gap in your ability to take cards.
Do I have to change my business bank account?
No. Card processing and banking are separate. Your settlements simply arrive into the same account from a different acquirer, with no change to your banking relationship.
