Looking for a Zettle alternative?
Zettle, from PayPal, is a popular starting point for small and mobile businesses: buy the reader, pair it with a phone, and take a card in minutes with a single published percentage and no contract.
As card turnover grows, that flat percentage becomes the main cost of trading. Our alternative is a standalone terminal at no cost, no monthly rental, and 0.85% blended across debit, credit, Amex and the wallets.
Zettle published pricing vs our 0.85% blended
| Zettle | Shift4 | |
|---|---|---|
| Debit card rate | 1.75% | 0.85% blended |
| Credit card rate | 1.75% | 0.85% blended |
| Monthly rental | £0 | £0 |
| Authorisation fee | None published | None |
| Card machine cost | Bought outright | £0 |
| Payouts | Next working day | Next working day, including Saturdays |
Our rate is 0.85% blended across debit, credit, Amex, Apple Pay and Google Pay, with £0 monthly fees and no charge for the machine. Zettle figures above are their published rates; a blended comparison assumes a typical 60% debit and 40% credit split.
What switching involves
There is generally no agreement to unwind, so the practical change is from a phone-paired reader to a standalone terminal with its own connection, printer and battery. Most people find the day-to-day faster.
You will go through underwriting for a merchant account, which asks for more information up front than a reader signup. In return you get the lower rate and settlement into your business account the next working day.
Contract-end considerations
Zettle's standard terms are pay-as-you-go with no fixed period, so exit costs are not usually a factor. Check any linked PayPal services you use separately.
Our terms are rolling with no lock-in, so you keep the flexibility you have now.
